Federal Wrestling and Alpine Games Festival 2013
From 30 August to 1 September, Burgdorf in the Emmental will play host to the Federal Wrestling and Alpine Games Festival (Eidgenössisches Schwing- und Älplerfest) 2013.
Sports event with a folk festival twist
From 30 August to 1 September, Burgdorf in the Emmental will play host to the Federal Wrestling and Alpine Games Festival (Eidgenössisches Schwing- und Älplerfest) 2013.
This festival is Switzerland’s largest recurring sporting event and one of the country’s most significant folk festivals. It is held every three years, in a different location each time.
More than 250,000 visitors are expected and around 50,000 individuals will follow the events of the traditional Swiss sports of Schwingen (Swiss wrestling), Hornussen (a traditional team sport, which involves throwing and catching a type of puck called Hornuss) and Steinstossen (stone throw) live at the “Emmental Arena”, the largest stadium in Switzerland, and at the other competition venues.
Emmental and the sport of Schwingen
Schwingen, man-to-man combat in sawdust, is a modern sport which has successfully retained its original roots and traditions. It is for this exact reason that the ESAF festival is such a perfect fit for the green, hilly Emmental – as among these rolling hills along the Emme river, visitors encounter both living traditions and vibrant 21st century life.
In addition, the Emmental is one of the historic areas of origin of the sport of Schwingen.
The Emmental is famed for its hospitality. This is apparent from the many guests who spend holidays or enjoy excursions here every year.
Coupled with our legendary reliability and our passionate commitment to perfect organization, the ESAF 2013 festival is in great hands ‘at home in the Emmental’.
